Book French Roast (Dare Valley Series, Book 2) Review :

I really enjoyed Nora Roberts Land, and although at times I found Jill's extreme hostility towards Brian extreme, I still liked the book enough that I wanted to continue reading their story in French Roast. I really wish I hadn't.While it can be enjoyable to dive into characters who have that "we're at each other's throats yet we can't fight our passion for each other" story line, Jill and Brian just flat-out have a very dysfunctional relationship. Jill is supposed to be this savvy, competent and confident business woman, yet she acts like a 12 year old in the emotional department where Brian is concerned. I was actually cringing for her during several parts of the book. I still don't understand WHY she was in love with Brian, other than the fact that she had been "in love" with him since she was in kindergarten? Really? And Brian is one of the most unlikable major characters I've come across in a long time. He was supposed to have emotional wounds because his jerk dad and classmates thought his love for cooking was gay in high school? COME ON. Since when is a cooking/chef profession looked on as gay, even 10+ years ago? It would have made more sense if the dad was just an abusive alcoholic lacking any redeemable father qualities. So that was the depth of Brian's character, and he just came off as immature, self-absorbed, self-centered, and was almost toying with Jill's emotions at times.Their "love story" played out like a bad teen drama. They had real issues they needed to work out, yet decided to completely and deliberately NOT discuss those issues so they could what...just have a ton of hot sex? Because jumping into a sexual relationship when it's already dysfunctional and in turmoil always solves problems *rolls eyes*.The relationship they had was confusing to me on why they were trying so hard to make it work with each other. It got to the point to where I actually wanted them to just break up for good, because there was never a good argument for why they really belonged together. I like rooting for my characters, and although at times you want to shake them for being stubborn/blind/hard headed, etc., it's always so rewarding to cheer them on and see them live happily ever after. Not in in this case. They both have an epiphany on a major belief pattern they've been carrying around forever and suddenly *poof* all their issues are solved? Puh-leeeze. And I won't even get into the ridiculousness of the surprise Jill gets at the end of the book.As for Peg and Mac, based on the set up we've already gotten in this book, I don't have high hopes I will enjoy the next book in the series. Peg is so out of touch with the "woman" in her, she came off as almost a stereotypical butch lesbian. It's almost absurd to believe that a drop-dead gorgeous, charismatic man like Mac would somehow see all these layers to Peg and immediately be interested in her, especially when she was at her absolute worst. She was just so rude to everyone throughout most of the book, it didn't make any sense that Jill was all girly-girl BFF chatty with her. Although I enjoyed her when she was in mom mode with Keith, I don't have much interest in seeing her story unfold.Overall, I felt this book really strayed from the continuity and development of the first book, and obviously was quite disappointed by it. Maybe future books will be more entertaining.
This was an absolutely awful book!!!Jill had so much potential in this book and the author dropped the ball. Jill was supposed to be a strong, willful, free-spirit. By the end of the book, I was so disgusted with her antics, I didn't care if it turned out for her or not! She was such a disappointment for me!Brian on the other hand was an idiot. To keep making the same mistake over and over, please! I get that in these types of stories the man is supposed to be "in the dark", but not this bad! Whenever the family would have a conversation it was always pointless and never amounted to anything.Let's not forget Simca...the author brought in this "twist", then once again dropped the ball. This character appeared as if the author forgot about her and then threw her into a scene in a very clumsy and ineffectual manner. For a "femme fatal" she had all the looks and style needed, but was so passive as to be a worthless addition to this story. She wasn't even bad or mean enough to hate! I couldn't even summon up a small amount of frustration over her actions. She was unnecessary in this book, Jill and Brian were so stupid all by themselves!I must also take exception to the Hale family. I understand that it is essential to be unbiased when you're a reporter. However, that doesn't translate into everyday life with your family! You can take a stand when it comes to family without compromising your ethics! But, this author felt the need to silence the outspoken Hale family when it came to Jill and Brian! How inaccurate for this family! The author also seemed more interested in setting up the characters for the next book more than she was interested in writing this book! The main story of Brian and Jill took backseat to the sub plot of Peggy and Mac. So I can only surmise that this will also happen in the next book! Unfortunately the author did not provide enough interest for me to find out anything further, unless the third book is offered for free.
