Ebook About A haunting, suspenseful literary debut that combines a classic coming of age story with a portrait of a fractured American family dealing with the fallout of one summer evening gone terribly wrong.“The night we left Ellen on the road, we drove up the mountain in silence.” It is the early 1980s and fifteen-year-old Libby is obsessed with The Field Guide to the Trees of North America, a gift her Irish immigrant father gave her before he died. She finds solace in “The Kingdom,” a stand of red oak and thick mountain laurel near her home in suburban Pennsylvania, where she can escape from her large and unruly family and share menthol cigarettes and lukewarm beers with her best friend. One night, while driving home, Libby’s mother, exhausted and overwhelmed with the fighting in the backseat, pulls over and orders Libby’s little sister Ellen to walk home. What none of this family knows as they drive off leaving a twelve-year-old girl on the side of the road five miles from home with darkness closing in, is what will happen next. A Crooked Tree is a surprising, indelible novel, both a poignant portrayal of an unmoored childhood giving way to adolescence, and a gripping tale about the unexpected reverberations of one rash act.Book A Crooked Tree: A Novel Review :
Let me preface this by saying that while this coming of age book practically broke me it also invited me into a world of immense tenderness. Told through the eyes of a thoughtful, observant 15-year old girl who is just beginning to piece the world together.Libby is the middle of five kids who are neglected by their mother and recently lost their father. The conflict begins when their mom is driving them home back up the mountain where they live and she has just had it with Ellen, the second youngest, whose complaints have pushed her to her breaking point. She does the unthinkable and puts her daughter out of the car on the side of the road to fend for herself. What happens that night alters their lives dramatically. The first domino is pushed, providing all the momentum for more to be knocked over. Only, this is not a game.Libby is just trying to hold on. To her best friend, her babysitting job, her oldest sister, to protect Ellen, and the memories she holds dear of her father. At a minimum, Libby wants her basic needs met, care and concern from her living parent. She deserves that and much more.If you grew up in the 80s, get ready for some rad nostalgia. Mannion cleverly set her story in an era that offers a breath of fresh air even if it serves as backdrop for some heavy topics. Without the ever-present attachment to technology, the characters have a freedom, that seems long forgotten. In A CROOKED TREE, Libby will gently carry you through the woods, her grief quietly whispering beside her. What a haunting, suspenseful, and heartbreaking book. I gave this book two stars because it is a debut novel, and the beginning is interesting, but it's downhill from there. The premise of the novel, a mother so stressed out that she leaves one of children by the side of the road to walk home, could have led to a very compelling read. That, however turns out to be the most interesting part of the whole book. The narrator is the middle child and in telling her version of the story the author allows her to wander into areas that do not propel the story at all. All of the information about the dead father was unnecessary, as is the information about the narrator's adolescent love life. It would have been a much better novel had the story been told from the perspective of one of the older children. Also, I would have liked it better had the novel stuck to events unfolding as a result of the beginning. It would have given the novel a faster pace, and been much more interesting. As it is, it drags.
